Remember?

Do you still lie awake at night

Like I do

Remembering

How my cheeks were washed in frustrated tears

At the ridiculous possibility

Of a you and me?

How your hand, impossibly tender on my left cheek

Wiping those tears away

Followed by your warm lips on my right cheek

Suggested that you didn’t think

That a you and me together

Was so ridiculous at all

Do you still lie awake at night

Like I do

Remembering

That you said that night

That you just needed to kiss me?

How you leaned in and kissed my mouth

Lovely and lingering

Exploding the world I had been living in

Into a thousand new possibilities

Do you still lie awake at night

Like I do

Remembering

How my fingers entwined into your unruly hair

And your arms drew me into you

Until every possible surface was touching?

Like we were puzzle pieces, alone and separate

Waiting our whole lives

To finally fit together

Do you still lie awake at night

Like I do

Remembering

How you asked if you could spend the night with me?

And I said I would like that

You led me through the house to your room

Stopping on the landing

To look me deeply in the eyes

And whispered reverently into the night “I love you”

Do you still lie awake at night

Like I do

Remembering

How we helped each other undress that night?

Each layer removed bringing a new vulnerability

Until we were naked in ways

That neither of us expected

It was thrilling and terrifying

Our hearts pounding

Knowing that once we knew each other

In all our naked fragility

There would be no going back
