Longing

She knew something of longing

The ache of the soul at 2 am

The tears that well up unbidden

In the corners of eyes

Pain in the chest as if something

Or someone

Was squeezing the heart

Or pressing downward

Making it hard to breath

Yes, she knew something of longing

That sense that something

Indefinable

Unnamed

Was missing

A person

A place

A thing

A part of the soul

She was never sure

Yes, she knew something of longing

The loneliness

The isolation

Whether alone or surrounded

In a crowd

Never being fully seen

Never being fully heard

Perhaps longing she thought

Was the search for the pair of eyes

On a city street, a book store, a coffee shop

Who looked into the deepest, darkest corners

Of a person, of a heart, of a soul

With knowing, understanding

With compassion, acceptance

And didn’t look away

She knew something of longing
