The Daily Song: Fix You (Coldplay) Matthew Mayfield

I love that no matter where I am on my own journey, there is still so much to learn and so many incredible artists to be inspired be.  Two of the artists who have really stood out for me the last few months are writer S. K. Nicholas (A Journal for Damned Lovers) and singer songwriter Matthew Mayfield.  They both have voices that transport me, that take me places I didn’t even know I wanted to go.  They haunt me, they challenge me, they make me think, and most importantly, they make me feel.  Matthew Mayfield is a brilliant songwriter and I usually highlight him performing his original music but the way he inhabits Coldplay’s Fix You really transported me.  This is special.  I am uneasy with the  concept of whether we can and should try to “fix” anyone, but the rest of the lyrics resonate very strongly for me.

Fix You

Written by Christopher Anthony John Martin, Guy Rupert Berryman, Jonathan Mark Buckland, William Champion

When you try your best but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

When the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

High up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
If you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears come streaming down your face
And I

Tears come streaming down your face
I promise you I will learn from all my mistakes
Tears come streaming down your face
And I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

  1. Once again I really appreciate that you share music. It always resonates with me. I’ve heard this song a million times but just read the lyrics. Especially relate with “…When you’re too in love to let it go
If you never try you’ll never know
    Just what you’re worth”

That’s been very difficult for me to accept. Conversely, one of my favorite songs of theis is Sparks… if your in a mood for trippy, melow, makeout music.

I’ll have to read SK Nicolas.

BTW… Your cover pic above of the hand searching reminded me if Through the Dark… which is why I thought of it last time.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

    1. Mark– I always appreciate you taking the time and commenting. Part of what I love about covers is that they often give me pause and really make me tune into the lyrics. Self-worth has been a lifelong struggle for me too, no matter how much positive feedback I get. S.K. Nicholas writing isn’t pretty– its gritty and meaty and raw and it appeals me in a way I never expected. The cover pic is really meaningful to me– I thought it really matched me sense of reaching out for the world and who I used to be.
