A Room of My Own: My Teenage Bedroom in 10 objects

Old brass bed with a missing bar on the footboard

Paperbacks lined up neatly by publisher, the authors alphabetized

Love’s Baby Soft, the jewelry box my first boyfriend made me in shop class (and gave to me with a floating heart pendant and a Journey cassette), and other flotsam and jetsam of teenage life neatly arranged on the dresser

Drop front desk  full of cubbies where I hide my secrets, my treasures as well as my dog-eared writing notebooks

Slanted floorboards that marbles roll down

Jaunty door frames

Unicorn collection neatly lining the tops of tevery surface- my favorite a cobalt blue unicorn dessert plate and coffee mug

Boom box playing “Sexy and Seventeen,” “Hello Irene,” “Our House,” “Safety Dance” while I paint Pepto Bismo pink walls pale yellow

Collages made with cut up magazines and the treasured wallpaper sample books my aunt rescued for me

The mouse who lives in the dresser drawer, leaving piles of birdseed for a rainy day
