Sappho wrote that words
we leave unspoken
will be wept
If true
soliloquies must rest
like sugar undissolved
on my tongue
I am grateful
for the sun
that comes out
but melancholy is still
an aquamarine tide
that washes over me
unexpectedly
flooding my banks
piercing my sea walls
reminding me
of how deeply human I am
of the delicacy
the fragility
of this woman’s heart

I think of sun and shade
On a partly cloudy day,
Of the toasting bright
And shivering dim,
As a whimsical wind
Makes the sun and clouds
Play Hide and Seek.

Beautiful. Love the reference to Sappho, one of my favorite ancient poets.
