stifled

words sit thick in my mouth
a peanut butter and regret
sandwich
that i can neither
swallow
nor expel onto
the empty plate
a stasis of stale bread
and denial
i am trapped
muffled
mute
unable
(or is it
unwilling?)
to scrape truth
from my
tender tongue
