IT ATE BILLY ON CHRISTMAS – Georgiann Carlson

Billy was always a bit odd
at least that’s what his dog thought
and who better to know odd
than a dog
you see Billy saw things others didn’t
as a child, the monsters under his bed
well, the monsters under his bed and in his closet
were real
even the dog saw them
as Billy got older
the monsters started fading
and the dog was quite happy about that
since he had been keeping the monsters at bay
but he was getting old
and his power was fading
then
on Christmas Day
while the dog was napping in his basket
with his new toy and a chew bone
the biggest monster of all
chased Billy down the street
when he finally caught him
he kind of ate him
later that evening
when everyone was cleaning up wrapping paper
the dog went outside and tracked down the monster
he demanded that Billy be returned to the living
but the monster said it was far too late
Billy
it seemed
had already been digested
so the dog ate the monster
went back inside
crawled into his basket
and was forced to listen to christmas carols
being sung by people who had absolutely no singing voices at all
which only proved to him
that no good deed goes unpunished
