there are many chapters in The Book of Difficult Fruit
I mean bananas are never easy
everyone knows that
but the most difficult fruits of all
are the sneaky and calculating PEARS
sure
they may look innocent
all green and flashy
their perky stems sticking out at interesting angles
but in reality
they are tricksters
counting the moments until we turn our backs
so they can rot all at the same time
we buy them when they are as hard and unripe as a brick
but on the way home from the store
they have already started laughing
already started softening up
already started turning into MUSH
if you want to eat pears
eat them IN the store
anything else just wastes your time
as well as the pears
without a doubt
they are the most difficult of all fruits

Thank you Beth. I have two of them turning on me, even as I type.

Then there are the pears that sit, brick hard, on the counter for days and nights, and then one morning have gone to mush, apparently at the witching hour.
