The Daily Song: Sideline/Niia and Jazmine Sullivan

Atmospheric, jazzy soul piece that plays like film noir.  Fabulous harmonies and strings.

[Intro]
Da da da da da
Da da da da
Da da da da
Da da da

[Verse 1]
Yeah, I know, she’s still the background on your phone, and
I know, I know, it takes time to get someone out your mind
You don’t give me any signs
And I told you all the passwords to mine
And I’ll admit I haven’t been completely faithful
It was way back, in April, and we didn’t have a label
Yeah I tried to play it cool, cause we were never really stable
It’s never ever able to figure out

[Chorus]
Keep waiting for the right time
While you keep me on the side line
I’m sick of all this trying, trying, trying
While I watch you drift further away-ay

[Verse 2]
It’s like I have you but I don’t really have you
To flatter, to sender
What’s the point if you don’t know who?
When you play someone a finished song
It’s the caught up, and the demo
I love all of my new new songs
But I could still use more tempo
Now I hate when you’re with me
Ooh you got one head in
The other head is far away, still decidin’
Oh, and I keep tryin’, tryin’, ooh

[Chorus]
Keep waiting for the right, time
While you keep me, on the side line
I’m sick for this tryin’, tryin’, tryin’
While I watch drift further away

[Bridge]
All I give, all I give, all I give, you
All I give, all I give, all I give, to you
Why do you need her and me?
Pick a side, yeah

[Chorus]
Keep waiting for the right time
Still on the side line
I’m so far away
Keep waiting for the right time
While you keep me on the side line
I’m sick of all this tryin’, tryin’, tryin’
While I watch you drift further away
Yeah, yeah
Keep tryin’, tryin’
You’re lyin’, lyin’, lyin’

The Daily Song: Colin Hay/ I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You

One of my favorite movie soundtracks of all time is the soundtrack for Garden State.  Really feeling Colin Hay’s I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You this one today. . .

“I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You”

I drink good coffee every morning
Comes from a place that’s far away
And when I’m done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to sayDon’t want you thinking I’m unhappy
What is closer to the truth
If I lived till I was a hundred and two
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you

No longer moved to drink strong whiskey
I shook the hand of time and I knew
That if I lived till I could no longer climb my stairs
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you

A face that dances and it haunts me
With laughter still ringin’ in my ears
I still find pieces of your presence here
even, even after all these years

I don’t want you thinkin’ that I don’t get asked to dinner
Cuz I’m here to say that I sometimes do
And even though I may seem to feel a touch of love
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you

If I lived till I was a hundred and two
I just don’t think I’ll ever get over you

The Daily Song: Know Your Name/Mary Lambert

Pure campy fun from the delightful Mary Lambert.

“Know Your Name”

Lady, can I get you closer?
Lady, would you come on over?
I, think I’m ready this time
I think I like your hands in mine
Lady, I got a question for you
Lady, think that you’re the answer
Lady, gonna see me later
Hey, wanna go to dinner?I wanna take you out
I wanna make you shake
I wanna drive you out
But I probably shouldn’t

Know your name, when I finally get to, ooh
Be the one who gets to
Hold you close in the night in the dark be your light
I should know your name
When I finally get to, ooh
Be the one who gets to
Hold you close in the night in the dark be your light
I should know your name

It could be so good
But I probably should know you name

Lady, got a car and a weekend
Lady, do you feel what I’m feelin’?
I, get to see you again
I love the way that you walked in
Lady, I’ve been waiting for ya
Hey, wanna go out dancin’?
Hey, would you take a chance on me?

I wanna take you out
I wanna make you shake (shake)
I wanna drive you out
But I probably shouldn’t

Know your name, when I finally get to, ooh
Be the one who gets to
Hold you close in the night in the dark be your light
I should know your name
When I finally get to, ooh
Be the one who gets to
Hold you close in the night in the dark be your light
I should know your name

It could be so good
But I probably should know you’re name

I’m a, I’m a little delusional
A little unusual
But I’ve got a heart that wants your heart
I know, I’m a little obsessed wit this
Only think about your kiss
I don’t know why I don’t know you, yet

When I finally get to
Be the one that gets to
Hold you close in the night in the dark be your light
I should know your name
When I finally get to, ooh
Be the one who gets to
Hold you close in the night in the dark be your light
I should know your name

I know, I’m a little delusional
A little unusual
I’ve got a heart that wants your heart
I know I’m a little obsessed with this
Only think about your kiss
Don’t know why
I should know your name

The Daily Song A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall Bob Dylan/Patti Smith Cover

When Patti Smith accepted the Nobel Prize on Bob Dylan’s behalf she sung a stunning and emotional version of A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall.  If you had forgotten for a moment what an amazing writer Bob Dylan is or what an fabulous performer Patti Smith is, this will remind you.  I cannot imagine a more relevant performance given what is currently going on in our world.

I recommend The New Yorker’s  great piece A TRANSCENDENT PATTI SMITH ACCEPTS BOB DYLAN’S NOBEL PRIZE

A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall Bob Dylan

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son

And where have you been, my darling young one

I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains

I’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways

I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests

I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans

I’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard

And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard

It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son

And what did you see, my darling young one

I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it

I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it

I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin’

I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin’

I saw a white ladder all covered with water

I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken

I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children

And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard

It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?

And what did you hear, my darling young one?

I heard the sound of a thunder that roared out a warnin’

Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world

Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin’

Heard ten thousand whisperin’ and nobody listenin’

Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin’

Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter

Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley

And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard

It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

Oh, what did you meet, my blue-eyed son?

Who did you meet, my darling young one?

I met a young child beside a dead pony

I met a white man who walked a black dog

I met a young woman whose body was burning

I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow

I met one man who was wounded in love

I met another man who was wounded with hatred

And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard

It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

And what’ll you do now, my blue-eyed son?

And what’ll you do now, my darling young one?

I’m a-goin’ back out ‘fore the rain starts a-fallin’

I’ll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest

Where the people are many and their hands are all empty

Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters

Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison

And the executioner’s face is always well hidden

Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten

Where black is the color, where none is the number

And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it

And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it

Then I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’

But I’ll know my song well before I start singin’

And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard

It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall

The Daily Song: Sign of the Times/Harry Styles

I know, I know. . . it’s Harry Styles.  But I really dig this.

“Sign Of The Times”

Just stop your crying
It’s a sign of the times
Welcome to the final show
Hope you’re wearing your best clothesYou can’t bribe the door on your way to the sky
You look pretty good down here
But you ain’t really goodWe never learn, we’ve been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets, the bullets?
We never learn, we’ve been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
Your bullets, the bullets?Just stop your crying
It’s a sign of the times
We gotta get away from here
We gotta get away from here
Just stop your crying
It’ll be alright
They told me that the end is near
We gotta get away from here

Just stop your crying
Have the time of your life
Breaking through the atmosphere
And things are pretty good from here

Remember, everything will be alright
We can meet again somewhere
Somewhere far away from here

We never learn, we’ve been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets, the bullets?
We never learn, we’ve been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets, the bullets?

Just stop your crying
It’s a sign of the times
We gotta get away from here
We gotta get away from here
Stop your crying
Baby, it’ll be alright
They told me that the end is near
We gotta get away from here

We never learn, we’ve been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
The bullets, the bullets?
We never learn, we’ve been here before
Why are we always stuck and running from
Your bullets, the bullets?

We don’t talk enough
We should open up
Before it’s all too much
Will we ever learn?
We’ve been here before
It’s just what we know

Stop your crying, baby
It’s a sign of the times
We gotta get away
We got to get away
We got to get away
We got to get away
We got to get away
We got to—we got to—away
We got to—we got to—away
We got to—we got to—away

The Daily Song: The Night We Met/Lord Huron

There is some music that gets under your skin, ricochets around your brain, hums in your blood.   This is one of those songs.  I am a woman with many ghosts.

The Night We Met
I am not the only traveler
Who has not repaid his debt
I’ve been searching for a trail to follow again
Take me back to the night we met
And then I can tell myself
What the hell I’m supposed to do
And then I can tell myself
Not to ride along with you
I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don’t know what I’m supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Oh, take me back to the night we met
When the night was full of terrors
And your eyes were filled with tears
When you had not touched me yet
Oh, take me back to the night we met
I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don’t know what I’m supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Take me back to the night we met

The Daily Song-In The Dark/Matt Woods

Beautiful knife in my heart

So I’m finally where I wanna be

And I can’t feel my legs

At the borders of reality

And I’m tripping over the edge

Like Lord

I just died in your arms

There’s no better way to go

I just died in your arms

And I thought you should know that

You don’t have to save me every time

Just leave me in the dark

You don’t have to save me every time

Let me lose my heart, my heart, my heart

Now the waters are the open sea

They’re inviting me in

Till the waves are crashing over me

Then I forget how to swim

Like Lord

I just died in your arms

There’s no better way to go

I just died in your arms

And I thought you should know that

You don’t have to save me every time

Just leave me in the dark

You don’t have to save me every time

Let me lose my heart, my heart, my heart

(I’ll never learn)

Tell me you love me

(Just wanting me)

Tell me you understand, oh

(I’ll never learn)

Tell me you love me, oh

You don’t have to save me every time

Just leave me in the dark

You don’t have to save me every time

Let me lose my heart, my heart, my heart

The Daily Song: What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve – Ella Fitzgerald

Ella Fitzgerald.  What else is there to say?

What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve

Maybe it’s much too early in the game
Aah, but I thought I’d ask you just the same
What are you doing New Year’s
New Year’s Eve?

Wonder whose arms will hold you good and tight
When it’s exactly twelve o’clock that night
Welcoming in the New Year
New Year’s Eve

Maybe I’m crazy to suppose
I’d ever be the one you chose
Out of a thousand invitations
You received

Aah, but in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance
What are you doing New Year’s
New Year’s Eve?

The Daily Song: River-Joni Mitchell

Goosebumps

River

It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
But it don’t snow here
It stays pretty green
I’m going to make a lot of money
Then I’m going to quit this crazy scene
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I made my baby cry
He tried hard to help me
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I’m so hard to handle
I’m selfish and I’m sad
Now I’ve gone and lost the best baby
That I ever had
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh I wish I had a river
I made my baby say goodbye
It’s coming on Christmas
They’re cutting down trees
They’re putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace
I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
