Petals

Peeling back my layers

Slowly, gently, carefully

One by one

Like the petals of a zinnia bud

My instinct is usually

To stay your hand

Afraid of what we will find

When we reach

My core

Delicate stirrings

Like butterfly wings

Whisper to me

To let you closer

Allow you to continue to unfold me

Slowly, gently, carefully

Growing hope that when we

Reach my center

We will find incandescence

We can bathe in

Confessional

Do you kneel

on cold flagstone floor

when confessing to me

those sins

you longed to keep hidden?

Those human failings

dark deeds

fatal flaws

incongruent

with the self-portrait

you handed me

in gilt-edged frame

guileless smile on your face

Did you think me

judge and jury

meting out Old Testament justice?

Harsh faced priest

behind the confessional wall

powerful enough

to damn you to hell?

Avenging angel?

I do not keep the gods

on speed dial

I am no stone cold bitch

dripping paint brush in hand

ready to paint the letter

of your shame

on your chest

I am sorry

that the lies and omissions

you protected so fiercely

have caught up with you

cracked your beautiful facade

I am sorry

that you are so fearful

that I cannot love your imperfect truth

No Ordinary Love

Inspired by You + Me’s haunting cover of No Ordinary Love

Reaching across

a distance

more formidable

than miles

fathoms

leagues

you reached out

your hand

to where I stood

alone

in all my protective titanium armor

trembling

afraid

You offered me nothing less

than your beating heart

Nothing more than this moment

this chance

You said

Jump

I won’t let you fall

Your eyes holding truth

your sweet smile steady

your voice so full

of strength

hope

trust

that even I

believed I could fly

That we could fly

So I jumped. . .

The Taste of Citrus

Silken black blindfold

Covers eyes

Feel your thumb

Tracing my bottom lip

“Open up” you say

I hesitate only briefly

Before I obey

Tongue and teeth greeted

With sweet-tart taste of ripe

Blood orange

Juices running

Down chin

Collarbone

Bare breasts

You feed me more segments unhurridly

Citrus dripping

Skin sticky

Your lips

Long and lingering on mine

Before trailing down to drink

Sweet-tart juice

From my warm skin
